It’s nearly Halloween, my favorite holiday! I’ve got some spooky things for you this week, along with some not-so-spooky (buy very fun) events like a cheese class and a musical improv festival!
Fri 20: New York Musical Improv Festival
Magnet Theater, 254 W. 29th St, 7:00 PM – 12:00 AM
NYMIF is in its ninth year, and it’s lookin’ better than ever! This weekend-long extravaganza of musical improvisation features acts from as far away as Berlin and as close as the theater’s house teams. If you’re interested in learning how to make the magic for yourself, there are also workshops you can check out!
Fri 20: Phantom of the Opera – Silent Movie with Live Organ
Loew’s Jersey Theatre 54 Journal Square Plaza, Jersey City, 8:15 – 11:10, $10
What’s better than a little classic horror? Classic horror with an actual organ bring in those creepy feelings along with your classic cinema!
Sat 21: Dia de los Muertos Pop up Market
La Sirena Mexican Folk Art, 27 E 3rd St, 12:00 PM – 6:00 PM, Free
La Sirena Mexican Folk Art is a magical place that sells high-end goods and traditional crafts, and boy have they got a Dia de los Muertos set-up for you! The last time I was in Mexico City I filled my travel bag with charming Day of the Dead curio boxes, and now they’re yours to enjoy as well.
Sat 21: 27th Annual Tompkin’s Square Park Halloween Dog Parade
Tompkins Square Park, 12:00 PM – 3:00 PM, Free
If joy and happiness are your cup of tea, you’d better make it over to Tompkin’s Square Park to see dozens if not thousands of adorable puppers and dogos dressed as what I can only assume will be the entire cast of Stranger Things.
Sun 22: Soulful Creatures and Green-Wood Cemetery Trolley Tour
Brooklyn Museum, 200 Eastern Parkway, 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM, $40
If you’re wondering what happens to those cute dogs featured above in the afterlife, check out Brooklyn Museum’s fabulous animal mummy exhibit, followed by a tour of Greenwood Cemetery, where you’ll enjoy the delightful shiver that comes from gazing at Victorian architecture anywhere near Halloween.
Sun 22: Nuyorican Cafe Puerto Rico Fundraiser
Sunny’s Bar, 253 Conover St, Brooklyn, 2:00 PM – 10:00 PM, All Donations Accepted
It’s a night of salsa and friendship all going to support Puerto Rico, which remains largely without electricity and cell service after Hurricane Irma.
Mon 23: Cheese Class: Cheeses from Burgundy and Alsace Regions at Le Dis
Le District, 225 Liberty Street, 6:30 – 7:30, $40
I am exactly about wine as I am about cheese: I love it, I want all of it, and I don’t really know jack squat about it. If you’ve ever purchased “NY cheddar” from one of those fancy places and wondered “why is it white?” this class might just be for you. Learn about those delicious stinky wonders from the head cheese & charcuterie monger at Le District.
Weds 25: Sex and the City Hotspots Tour
Pulitzer Fountain, 11:00 AM – 2:30 PM, $39
Ugh, you’re such a Miranda! Well, that’s cuz you’re such a Charlotte! If those are things you can, in your wildest dreams or nightmares, conceive of yourself saying, this tour is for you! Check out key highlights such as Carrie’s brownstone stoop (how dare she afford that) and the bar owned by Steve and Aiden!
