So many important things this week! Super Bowl, which people seem to get rull excited for, and some Chinese New Year celebrations! Whatever your pleasure, we’ve got something for you!
Fri 3: Musicians Against the Executive Order
The Italian Academy for Advanced Studies in America, Columbia University, 1161 Amsterdam Ave, $20 (suggested donation; all proceeds to ACLU)
It’s a real variety grab-bag at this performance benefitting the ACLU, motivated by our malignant dicator’s racist ban (am I showing my political cards here?) Enjoy jazz, improvised guitar and piano, concert spirituals, and new works.
Fri 3: First Fridays
The Frick Collection, 1 E 70th St, 6:00 PM, Free
Have you ever been to The Frick? No? Yes? C’mon, I can’t predict your answer over this blog. ANYWAY, this is your chance to go for free, and without annoying children! Nobody under 10 will be admitted, and the museum gives you permission to beat any 11 year-olds with stray artwork! (Note: this is false.)
Sat 4: Year of the Rooster Chinese Year New Year Celebration
Bo Law Kung Fu 69 W 14th St, Fl 4, 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM, $10
This past year was the Lunar New Year, which I failed to mention because I’m an uncultured monster. It’s not too late, though! Enjoy some Chinese lion dancing and Kung Fu, which I always think looks suspiciously like flying.
Sat 4: Ghost World
Videology Bar & Cinema 308 Bedford Ave, Brooklyn, 6:30 – 9:15, $10
Remember Ghost World? Hilarious, weird, timely (?). Grab some friends, buy some beers (discounted with ticket), and enjoy some early 2000’s nostalgia at one of Brooklyn’s coolest venues.
Sun 5: Winter Woodpecker Walk
Jamaica Bay Wildlife Reserve, 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM, Free
Look, you can’t all have a bird living in your wall like I do. I get to enjoy nature’s wonder on a daily basis, when I hear the scuttling of whatever-that-bird-is settling in for the night. Join a ranger who can describe all the little birdies to you. I’ve been to the Jamaica Wildlife Reserve before, and it’s beautiful. Treat yourself- it’s worth the commute.
Sun 5: Superbowl Sunday
Bohemian Hall, 2919 24th Ave, Astoria, 3:00 PM – 11:00 PM, Free
Look, the last time I was at Bohemian Hall I was on a date with a Czech man who ghosted me. But this isn’t about me. It’s time to watch the large men briefly tousle over a leather ball while drinking beer, and you might as well be at a place that serves tasty kraut and cheap chicken wings while you do it. ^_^
Mon 6: Would You Rather
VSpot Organics, 12 St Mark’s Place, 8:00 PM, free
We’re living in a horrible Trump dystopia, which feels like someone opened the book to the wrong page in a choose-your-own-adventure. Hopefully this show will turn the page to a better answer, as comedians do material inspired by “would you rather?” questions. Laugh it up!
Thurs 9: New York NY An Evening Conversation with Neil Gaiman
The Town Hall, 123 W 43rd St, 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM, $45
He’s reading from his new book of Norse mythology, and I can’t go because I have a colleague’s going away party, and I am so, so jealous of you for being able to go. The ticket price includes the price of the book, signed by Neil himself! Aaaaaghh!!!
