This is a week celebrating the unusual and awesome and awesomely unusual! We’ve got a bunch of people making up musicals on the spot, a fat-positive art show, a lesbian cooking and DJ event, and a cannabis film festival. Let your flag fly!
Fri 14: New York Musical Improv Festival
Magnet Theater, 254 W 29th St, 7:00 PM – 12:30, Various prices
It’s here! It’s finally here! 4 days of the best musical improv coast-to-coast has finally returned to the Magnet stage, and the world couldn’t be brighter. There’s improv all weekend, but Friday has some pretty choice shows. Check out the schedule to see which ones tickle your fancy (as they tickle the ivories) and enjoy all the musical madness!
Fri 14: Treetops Mad Science Fair and Dance Party
House of YES, 2 Wyckoff Ave, Brooklyn, 10:00 PM – 5:00 AM, Free (before 11)
It’s time for a crazy science fair! Check out audience-submitted projects like “a dolphin with too much time on its flippers” and “a TV set that will melt your soul” and similarly bizarre costumes as you dance and drink the night away.
Sat 15: Fatter IRL: a Fat Art Show
Pfizer 630, 630 Flushing Ave, Brooklyn, 6:00 PM, 10:00 PM, Free
This show is inspired by the phrase “fatter in real life,” which comes from fat-positive online groups subverting the idea that fat people are expected to shrink out of shame. Come check out the work of ten visual artists and one performance artist as they remind us all just how beautiful fat can be.
Sat 15: Dyke Bar Takeover: Put a Cat On It
Friends and Lovers, 641 Classon Ave, Brooklyn, 3:30pm-5:00pm $7.00 5:00pm-8:00pm $10.00
It’s a fun-filled day featuring pumpkin pies, fresh DJ beats, raffles, and lots of ladies who want to meet you. Their event photo also features Xena and Gabrielle, one of my favorite TV couples, so what more could you want?!
Sun 16: Queens Beer Fest
5-25 46th Ave, Long Island City, NY, 12:00 PM – 6:00 PM, various prices
Come enjoy all the fruits of Queens’ labors! A ticket’s admission gets you unlimited tastings. Saturday is almost totally sold out, so if you want to come you’d better hop to it!
Sun 16: NYC Cannabis Film Festival
Wythe Hotel, 80 Wythe Avenue, Brooklyn, 2:00 PM – 10:00 PM, $19-$47
The winds of change are full of the smell of skunk weed, but not everyone’s convinced. This festival seeks to promote the positive image of marijuana through film. Get yourself a little high, hop on the train to the Wythe Hotel, and spend a day with like-minded individuals.
Tues 18: Drink ‘n Draw
QED Astoria, 27-16 23rd Ave, 8:00 PM – 10:00 PM, $8 in advance / $10 day of event
It’s a social drawing event! Whether you’re sketching masterpieces or eeking out a stick man, you’re welcome to draw from the live model whose poses will change at varying times. Meet your fellow artists and enjoy a friendly drink together.
Weds 19: The Final Presidential Debate: A Show and A Watch Party
Bookstore Cafe, 126 Crosby Street, 8:00 PM – 11:30, $8 (includes a drink)
Some seriously hilarious funny comedians including Keisha Zollar and Aparna Nancherla, whom I’ve plugged elsewhere in the blog cuz they’re just so hilarious, will be giving commentary to this the final debate before our country either survives or crumbles into a hellscape. It’ll be fun!
